Recreation Program Lead - City of Mercer Island ( Job # 19-0039)

Senior Adult Social is a fun, caring and active program designed to provide a safe place for loved ones to socialize with friendly, sensitive staff and volunteers while providing respite for caregivers.  Adults who have physical, memory, hearing or vision limitations enjoy a number of activities to help maintain or improve mental and physical health and socialization.  The Recreation Program Lead will facilitate Senior Adult Social program participants in planned activities, discussions and other stimulating activities and events.

This position assists in the supervision and training of part-time employees and volunteers and is directly responsible for the supervision and safety of the participants in the program.  The primary duties of the Recreation Program Lead include planning, developing, coordinating, leading and supervising program activities, preparing and maintaining administrative paperwork as directed by the Recreation Coordinator/ Supervisor and providing a high level of customer service for patrons and staff.  The Recreation Program Lead must be able to develop a staff and volunteer team and will be required to work independent of direct supervision.  This staff member needs to be responsible and trustworthy and be able to engage appropriately with other staff, volunteers, and the public in difficult situations and times of stress.  This individual must to be able to connect with and care for senior adults whose limitations are both mental and physical and empower staff and volunteers to do the same.

WORK HOURS: 20-25 hours per week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)
HIRING RANGE:  $17.00 - $21.00 per hour (DOE)


Essential Job Functions
  • Directly lead and facilitate participants in programmed activities, discussions and special events.
  • Provide a safe environment for program participants and be able to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator/Supervisor, direct and oversee staff and volunteers assigned to the Senior Adult Social Program.
  • Ensure that the public, staff and volunteers are educated in the rules and policies of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department and that the staff enforces these rules and policies.
  • Prepare staff work schedules according to staffing requirements with assistance from the Recreation Coordinator/Supervisor.
  • Prepare monthly program activity calendars/newsletters, purchase necessary supplies and coordinate lunch services with service providers.
  • Track volunteer hours and authorize volunteer time sheets.
  • Maintain and complete assigned reports in a timely manner.
  • Provide a high level of customer service at all times.
  • Attend meetings with staff and/or the Recreation Coordinator/Supervisor as needed.
  • Maintain contact with caregivers as needed.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, including multi-passenger bus (CDL not required), possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
  • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualification Requirements
  • One-year of experience working in senior adult programming or social/healthcare work, preferably in a lead position.
  • Ability to work effectively in a lead staff role and communicate effectively with supervisor, staff and public.
  • Must show the ability to work cooperatively with staff and be able to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Previous computer experience working with Word, Excel, Outlook and Publisher.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications or the ability to obtain prior to start of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass a driving record check and a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Must be able to maintain First Aid and CPR/AED certifications
  • Must obtain Washington State Food Handler’s Permit.
Other City Requirements
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, including multi-passenger bus (CDL not required), possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
  • Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in adverse weather conditions and uneven surfaces (trails, fields) depending on the program, season and location. This position may be physically demanding in setting up and taking down events and activities, including pulling, pushing, bending, stooping, sitting, walking, climbing, crawling and/or standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Prolonged standing, sitting, and extensive computer and telephone use may be required. The work environment is sometimes stressful in trying to meet customer needs. Employee must be able to multi-task and handle interruptions in addition to regular work load. This position also requires good listening skills.
