Recreation Assistant (Seasonal) - City of Mercer Island ( Job # 20-0001)

Minimum Salary: $15.00 per hour
Maximum Salary: $18.00 per hour

The Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting the Recreation Team in the planning, organizing, development, scheduling, promotion and coordination of City recreation programs, activities and events. The Recreation Assistant will assist in customer service, community engagement, program delivery, rentals and marketing. This position will also contribute to the hiring, training & supervision of summer seasonal staff working at our summer day camps.  Programs may include, but are not limited to athletics, aquatics, arts, health and fitness, sport leagues, summer camps, special interest, outdoor recreation, excursions, special events, and other social and health services. This position reports to the Recreation Supervisor.

Work Hours:  40 hour per week (not to exceed 1,508 hours annually)


Essential Job Functions
  • Assist in identifying, planning, promoting and delivering a comprehensive citywide recreation program for preschool, youth, teen, adults, and seniors.
  • Assist Recreation Team in the training, supervision and leadership of seasonal summer staff.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to the community of Mercer Island and all participants using facilities and participating in programs.
  • Provide front desk coverage to support the customer service team.
  • Responsible for researching innovatitive evaluation processes, alternate funding sources and community partnership outreach.
  • Monitor registrations for specific activity areas, conduct interest surveys and maintain records, prepare written reports relating to assigned programs and perform evaluations on program areas.
  • Assist Marketing coordinator with marketing and outreach: Develop news releases, flyers, brochures, signs, posters and other digital marketing materials.
  • Set-up/take-down and coordination of events, rentals and activities, including planning, publicity, decorations, entertainment, games, prizes and refreshments.
  • Maintain materials, supplies and equipment including the replacing, repairing, cleaning and storing of items and equipment in inventory.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualification & Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Services/Management or related field, and at least one year experience in the Parks and Recreation field programming, planning and development of a wide variety of recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy, principles and practices related to the coordination of a comprehensive community recreation program for multiple age groups and abilities.
  • Ability to effectively plan, schedule and supervise programs, activities and special events.
  • Must be willing to submit to and pass a nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check investigation and reference check.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or willing to obtain within first six (6) months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to follow both oral and written instruction in the English language.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to work evening hours, weekends and holidays when required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Experience with computers and diverse software programs and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel for Windows (Microsoft Office preferred), activity registration and facility booking software (PerfectMind preferred) and other technology tools including digital cameras, scanners, copiers, fax machines, multi-line telephones, and cellular phones, etc.


Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in adverse weather conditions and uneven surfaces (trails, fields) depending on the program, season and location. This position may be physically demanding in setting up and taking down events and activities, including pulling, pushing, bending, stooping, sitting, walking, climbing, crawling and/or standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Prolonged standing, sitting, and extensive computer and telephone use may be required. The work environment is sometimes stressful in trying to meet customer needs. Employee must be able to multi-task and handle interruptions in addition to a regular work load. This position also requires good listening skills.
