Day Camp Counselor - City of Mercer Island ( Job # 20-0003)

The City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department is looking for Camp Directors for the following camps/activities.  Applicants will be interviewed and assigned to appropriate camp.   

  • Mini Mercer/Safety Town Day Camps, ages 3-5 (20-30 hours/week)
  • Camp Mercer, ages 6-11 (30-40 hours/week)
  • Mini Mercer Sports Camp, ages 4-6 (20-30 hours/week)
  • Adventure Playground Camp, ages 6-11 (25-35 hours/week)

General Responsibilities

The Camp Counselor position reports to the Day Camp Director and Recreation Supervisor.  The primary responsibility of the Camp Counselor is to supervise and lead children ages 3-11 through day camp activities such as games, sports, arts & crafts, songs and dance, while providing a safe and supervised environment for campers.   Other responsibilities include participating in training; maintaining records including time sheets, weekly attendance reports, and accident reports; responding to public inquires regarding the Day Camp Program; enforcing the Parks and Recreation Department’s rules and policies regarding the Day Camp Program; and providing a high level of customer service for patrons and staff.  May be required to work special events, evenings, weekends or holidays.  The position also supports other recreation programs within the Parks and Recreation Department and will be required to work special events such as Adventure Playground and Music in the Park. At times, you will be required to work split shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

Essential Functions
  • Enforce rules and policies of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department regarding the Day Camp Program.
  • Play and lead a variety of active games and activities with children on a daily basis.
  • Prevent accidents and injuries, and report any unsafe situations or conditions.
  • Wear designated uniform on the assigned days.
  • Provide a high level of customer service for patrons and staff.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and trainings regarding Camp issues.
  • Provide a safe environment for participants and have the ability to respond quickly to an emergency.
  • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements
  • Previous experience in day camp programs preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Have current First Aid and CPR certifications and food handlers permit (First Aid & CPR trainings available during training week and are paid by City).
  • Experience in leading children in one or more of the following areas; recreational games, arts, crafts, camping, music, drama, or sports.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record (If applicable). Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
  • Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

This position works indoors and outdoors with groups of children ranging in age from 3-11 years of age.  Must be able to physically play and demonstrate games, work with arts and crafts materials, work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, lift 20-50 lbs., and able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.  May work non-standard workweeks and shifts to include split shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
