Senior Programs Assistant - City of Mercer Island ( Job # 20-0012)

Summary

Senior Adult Social is a fun, caring and active program designed to provide a safe place for loved ones to socialize with friendly, sensitive staff and volunteers while providing respite for caregivers. Adults who have physical, memory, hearing or vision limitations enjoy a number of activities to help maintain or improve mental and physical health and socialization.  This position will assist the program on Tuesdays and some Thursdays.

This is a part-time position reporting to the Program Lead in charge of the Senior Adult Social Program.  The Senior Adult Social Assistant assists in the supervision of volunteers and the supervision and safety of the Senior Adult participant.  The primary duties of the Senior Adult Social Assistant are to support Program Lead in day-to-day operations including program delivery and group facilitation; Assist in creating a healthy and safe environment for program participants; Engage with other staff, volunteers, and the public and respond to and address difficult situations; Ability to connect with & care for senior adults whose limitations are both mental and physical.

APPROX. HOURS:  6 – 12 hours per week

CLASSIFICATION:  Part-time/Seasonal, Non-exempt

 


Essential Job Functions
 
  • Under the direction of the Program Lead, engage with and oversee the safety of program participants.
  • Plan and facilitate activities and group discussions.
  • Prevent accidents and injuries and report any unsafe situations or conditions to Program Lead.
  • Provide a high level of internal and external customer service at all times.
  • Attend necessary staff meetings.
  • Assist program lead in the planning of and facilitation of activities providing a stimulating environment for the participants.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
  • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements
 
  • One-year experience working in Senior Adult programming or social/healthcare work.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications or the ability to obtain prior to start of employment. Must be able to maintain First Aid and CPR/AED certifications
  • Must show the ability to work cooperatively with staff and be able to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Other City Requirements
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
  • Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

This position includes working mainly indoors with a group of 10 – 15 senior adults with varying cognitive, emotional, and physical limitations.  Must be able to physically demonstrate games, computer skills, work with arts and crafts materials, lift 20 lbs., and be able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner, including assisting with restroom needs of participants.  Must also be able to assist with food preparation, and cleaning of kitchen, and room.
