Electronics/Signal Technician I - City of Kirkland ( Job # 20-0035)

The Electronics Technician I position is an entry level position responsible to assist higher level Electronics Technicians with the installation, maintenance, repair, and adjustment of City traffic signals, street lights, pedestrian signals and related electrical or electronics equipment. This position has a career development plan which develops and advances the position to next level (level II) with requisite experience and certifications.  

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assist with routine maintenance, repair, and adjustment of traffic signals, intelligent transportation system equipment, pedestrian signals, street lighting, and related traffic control devices.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repair of malfunctioning traffic signals and other traffic control devices.
  • Oversees and reviews the installation of new electrical equipment by outside contractors with assistance of higher level technicians.
  • Assist with emergency repairs to equipment; these repairs may require responding outside normal work hours.
  • Assist with on-site electrical repair.
  • Operate bucket truck in live traffic to make repairs, adjustment, and inspections to traffic control devices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • May be required to return to work during off hours or in case of emergency.
Peripheral Duties
  • Perform minor street tree pruning for sight distance issues with traffic control devices.
  • Assist in transfer of responsibility for traffic signals between the City of Kirkland and other   agencies, including the State, County and adjacent Cities.
  • Assist Traffic Engineering Department and City Inspectors as required.
  • Perform underground locates as required.
  • Provide accurate timekeeping information.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic electrical/electronics theory as applied to the installation and repair of electrical circuits and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret simple engineering and electrical drawings, diagrams, charts, and schematics.
  • Ability to assist in maintenance and repair of traffic signals, street lights, and other electrical circuits and equipment; including all outside cabinet repairs and replacements and all inside cabinet replacements.
  • Knowledge of safe electrical, electronic, and construction working procedures and practices.
  • Ability to operate lift truck in a safe manner, according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Basic familiarity of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with contractors and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year experience in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of electrical circuits and systems, or equivalent education or course work.
  • Possess a valid and current Washington State flagging card or obtain within 1 year (12 months) of date of hire.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License
  • Possess and maintain current Combination Driver’s License (Class A) with air and tanker endorsement or must obtain within 1 year (12 months) of date of hire.

Once an incumbent meets the following criteria, they will move automatically to the Electronics Technician II position based on the following three criteria: 

  1. IMSA Traffic Signal Certifications, Level I and Level II with Bench Certification
  2. Two years experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and systems up to and including 250 volts
  3. One year of service with the City of Kirkland signal shop
Working Conditions & Physical Activities
  • Ability to work at heights in lift equipment
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Must be willing to work around the physical hazards of working with exposure to electrical wiring, operating heavy equipment, working from heights, and working in heavy traffic
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces
  • May work alone on routine tasks
