Summary

The Kirkland City Attorney’s Office is looking to hire a new Assistant City Attorney.

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of practice experience and be admitted to the Washington State Bar Association.  While work assignments are somewhat flexible, we are especially looking for individuals with municipal law experience in the areas of contracts and procurement, real property, employment and labor law, and taxes and licenses.  Some litigation experience strongly preferred.  In addition, general familiarity with municipal law in areas such as public records, open public meetings, appearance of fairness, and quasi-judicial proceedings is also strongly preferred.

In addition to advising clients and serving on the City’s legal team, the Assistant City Attorney will appear before the City Council in open and executive sessions and advise City boards and commissions.  We are looking for a collaborative team player and creative problem solver with strong social and interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and oral communication abilities. 

 


Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris doctorate or equivalent degree and an active member of the Washington State Bar Association in good standing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to research, analyze and explain complex legal issues to a variety of audiences. 
  • Strong computer-based legal research skills and proficiency with personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite applications. 
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
Special Note

The Assistant City Attorney is a non-represented position and included in the Management and Confidential (MAC) group.

Hours of Work

Core business hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.    Work Schedule to be mutually determined upon offer of employment.

Working Conditions & Physical Activities

Work is performed in a typical office environment.  Requires occasional work off-site or outside of regular office hours. Requires sitting for extended periods of time and keyboard operations.  Some periodic travel to off-site locations required.
