This position is one of three Senior Financial Analysts in the City’s Accounting Division of Finance. The Senior Financial Analysts are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the City’s general ledger system, chart of accounts, and capital asset system.  In addition, the division is responsible for annual financial reporting, internal audit/review, as well as monitoring and analyzing the general ledger activity for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), RCWs related to financial activities, grant requirements, and city policy.  The division also acts as liaison for the annual audit activities. Each analyst primarily has responsibility for providing expert advice, oversight and analysis for specific departments’ accounting transactions and reporting as well as providing backup support for other staff and general operational support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead or participate in project planning, research and analysis, coordination, and accurate and timely preparation of a significant portion of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
  • Provide ongoing review and analysis of accounting transactions for accuracy and troubleshooting of the City’s financial system.
  • Provide customer support to City departments (customers), including accounting expertise, advice and financial system reporting and training.
  • Gather data from departments; update periodic reports; analyze statistical data to identify and correct errors and to evaluate general content.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of GASB pronouncements and evaluate impact on current processes and reporting.
  • Work with department staff to ensure grant accounting, tracking and monitoring is in compliance with Federal , State, City and specific grantor requirements.
  • Assist in responding to the State Auditor’s requests for information in performing the City’s annual audit.
  • Assist in the collection of departmental financial information related to disaster recovery in compliance with Federal Emergency Management Assistance requirements.
  • Review internal processes and analytical reports and make recommendations to improve information resources and process flow.



  • Graduation from a 4-year college or university with a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or Public Administration.
  • Five years of professional related experience in accounting, budgeting, finance, investments, financial policy analysis or related field, preferably in the public sector.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience.



  • Advanced experience utilizing Windows-based spreadsheet software.
  • Experience utilizing Windows-based word processing and database software.
  • Experience with integrated Financial Applications or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems; JDE Enterprise One experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to independently research, analyze, evaluate, and solve complex analytical problems.
  • Must be able to work with large amounts of data, interpret financial records, detect and correct errors, and prepare financial reports in accordance with rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Must be able to effectively work both independently, with minimal supervision, and with others in a team environment.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain good relationships with Department management and financial staff both inside and outside the Finance Department.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple work assignments.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet established deadlines.
  • Must be able to deal effectively with politically sensitive information
