Summary

The Streetscape Maintenance Aide will work as a member of the Natural Resource Division’s Street Tree and Arterial Landscape Program. The position will work closely with and will report to the Street Tree Program Lead Worker. The primary workload involves landscape maintenance, site renovation, and maintenance of the City’s downtown street tree grates.

This position will perform a variety of manual labor tasks, assisting fully-trained personnel to repair, maintain, operate, and install basic City streetscape assets. Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes, and/or operations, to be completed in a manner that assures individual, co-worker, and public safety in all weather and working conditions. The City will provide a vehicle and the necessary tools.

 

Maintenance Aide I positions are primarily an entry/training level position and requires minimal prior experience.  Employee will receive direct supervision while on the job site.

Salary: $13.60-$18.78/hr

 

Maintenance Aide II positions require prior experience in related field(s). Employee will receive direct supervision while on the job site in most cases or the employee may work independently on the basis of clear instructions. 

Salary: $16.59-$22.89/hr



Primary Responsibilities

  • Cleaning, maintenance, and repair/removal of street tree grates and tree wells.
  • Hand-watering of trees and shrubs in streetscapes and native landscaping.
  • Assist in the Central Business District sidewalk sweeper process, and other selected City pathway sweeps.
  • Maintenance of streetscape sites – weeding, vegetation control and materials installation. Report site maintenance needs to supervisors.
  • Assist with planting projects or invasive species removal.
  • Assist irrigation staff with trenching and repairs, and assist with installation of temporary irrigation systems.
  • Assist with tree and shrub pruning, gathering and disposing of branches.
  • Maintain facilities, including plant stock and equipment.
  • Other general maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Work safely with landscape tools and equipment in the Right-of-Way.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or a GED equivalent, with some related construction or maintenance labor experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Required to possess a valid Washington driver’s license by date of hire.  Must have and maintain a good driving record according to City standards.  Current original drivers abstract required.
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with hand-held power tools and related maintenance equipment.
  • Basic mechanical skills and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to learn to operate safely the equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to listen and understand direction/instruction, effectively communicates with team members, and responds to customers tactfully and courteously.
  • Criminal History check required on all applicants.

  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately loud.
  • Exposure may include traffic, fumes, chemicals, flying debris, noise. 
  • Employee must be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions and provide own weather-related gear, such as rain gear or warm clothing.  Employees must provide and wear work clothing (tee shirts w/City logo provided) and boots (steel-toed not required) appropriate to their duties.  Some tasks require a long-sleeved shirt.

 

Definition of a Temporary

  • Hired on the City’s payroll for up to 9 months working full-time or part-time. 
  • Cannot work for more than 9 months in the previous 12 months, whether in the same position or a series of consecutive positions. 
  • Cannot work simultaneously as a temporary employee and a temporary agency worker. 
  • A temporary employee who has worked the 9 month maximum in the previous 12 months must have at least a 3-month break in service before being re-employed by the City in another temporary status. 
  • At-will for the duration of the temporary status, except as indicated by union contract. 
  • Employment eligibility of a new hire into a temporary status must be verified. 
  • Temporary workers will be placed in non-regular positions, and shall receive no other compensation or benefits than the designated base hourly rate for hours of actual work performed except as specifically authorized by ordinance.

 

Other

This is a temporary position for 6 months with possible extension to 9 months.  Union Position (Teamsters Local Union No. 763): After initial 2 months of continuous employment or within the month following the first day of rehire, employee will become a bargaining unit member and pay monthly union dues (current rate is 2.25 times their hourly rate of pay) and initiation dues as required.
