Supplemental Administrative Assistant I - Teen Center - City of Redmond ( Job # 13-0008)

Under the direction of the Teen Center Program Coordinator, this position performs a variety of general office functions in an active teen center environment and office setting. Duties include but are not limited to: word processing general correspondence, reports, memos, and flyers; answering multi-line phones, taking messages and directing callers; responding to inquiries about teen center activities, services and facility use; maintaining files and records; registering participants utilizing a computerized registration system; accepting payments and depositing money for fee-based programs; preparing minutes of monthly staff meetings and other meetings as needed; processing mail; assisting with event promotions including website updates, press releases and promotions distribution; providing oversight to and assisting with the hiring of internship positions; maintaining Access databases, including program participation and budget information; and performing other support duties as assigned.

Hours and Duration:

This is a supplemental (no benefits), part-time position that will work up to 20 hours per week with flexibility as needed.  Schedule may include late afternoon, some evening, and weekend hours.  May be required to work additional hours (with advanced notice) to meet peak workloads and provide vacation coverage. Position is limited to 1,040 hours per calendar year.


Knowledge of:  Current office practices, procedures and equipment; cashiering and financial recordkeeping; business English, grammar, and composition.

Skill in:  Operating computer hardware and related software (MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook and Access including writing simple database queries), graphics programs, and registration and/or facility booking software (CLASS) preferred.

Ability to:  Apply City policy and procedures; work effectively with teens, volunteers, City staff, police officers, community support agencies, and other diverse populations; work independently and in a team setting; communicate effectively using tact, patience, and courtesy; proactively deal with customer services concerns; take appropriate action in emergency situations; take direction from multiple staff; prioritize work and meet deadlines; follow written and verbal instructions; and have a high degree of accuracy in work product.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work AND one (1) year of related work experience in a recreation or customer service-oriented work environment. Experience working with teens in a recreation or youth environment preferred.

Licenses and Requirements:

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire and a driving record that meets City standards.  Must obtain valid First Aid/CPR certificates within 60 days of hire. Ability to work flexible hours required to meet peak workloads and provide vacation coverage. Schedule may include late afternoon, some evening, and weekend hours.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a teen center and busy office environment, which will include frequent interruptions and potentially stressful situations. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required.
