Summary

Under the direction of the Farm Program Coordinator, this position will:

  • Assist and support the programs, animals and facilities located at Farrel-McWhirter Park 
  • Provide basic animal care: feeding, grooming, conditioning, handling, first aid and routine health maintenance
  • Teach or assist with farm programs such as farm tours, wagon rides or pony rides; may also assist with equestrian programs
  • Maintain animal living areas - clean pens, stalls, and cages
  • Conduct routine maintenance of farm, office buildings and barnyard
  • Provide customer service - communicate farm and park policies and program information to public; this is a high public contact position and requires the ability to relate well with children and adults

Hours and Duration:

This is a part-time, supplemental position that will work 20-30 hours per week on average, not to exceed 1040 hours per calendar year.   Work schedule is flexible based on employee availability. May work additional hours for peak season, or weekends and holidays as scheduled by supervisor. 

Qualifications:

Experience working with horses and other farm animals is preferred, and work experience in a public setting is helpful. Must have the ability to: perform outside physical work in varying weather conditions; use small tools and learn to operate a small tractor; perform basic janitorial duties; communicate effectively with the public and other staff members; follow verbal and written instruction; enforce City policies and procedures; and work in a team setting to accomplish goals.

Licenses and Requirements:

Must be 16 years of age and have a Washington State driver's license by date of hire. Must have a driving record that meets City standards. Must be willing to obtain first aid and CPR certification upon hire. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a farm setting and includes exposure to farm animals, and farm equipment. Working conditions include indoor and outdoor tasks in all weather conditions.
