Summary

The City of Bellevue is currently accepting applications for one regular 1.0 FTE senior accounting associate position within the Finance Department’s Tax Division.  This position is primarily responsible for the fielding taxpayer inquiries made through the City’s tax information line and the Tax Division email inbox.  This position represents the first line of communication between the City and taxpayers and is responsible for responding expeditiously to routine taxpayer inquiries and requests and is primarily responsible for coordinating a response to more complex or non-routine matters.  This position is responsible for taxpayer account maintenance and performing reoccurring accounting tasks for the Tax Division.  Also, this position will partner with other staff to perform tax processing duties for the Tax Division. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with a senior level accounting association including the following tasks:

  • Fielding taxpayer inquiries via the City’s tax information phone line and email inbox during regular business hours.
  • Responding to routine taxpayer inquiries and routing non-routine or more complex inquiries to the appropriate staff member for resolution including tracking resolution of the matter.      
  • Researches taxpayer account discrepancies and communicates the results to internal and external customers.
  • Provides backup for Tax Division daily processing.
  • Performs taxpayer account and general ledger account reconciliations.
  •  Assists Tax Division with business education outreach.
  • Assist with tax research and other Tax Division projects.
  • Maintains Tax Division statistics. 

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

The end results of this position’s work are reviewed; however the performance of the work is generally unsupervised. The incumbent has demonstrated competency in performing most job elements and is asked to keep their supervisor informed of any unusual or difficult circumstances that arise.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Graduation from a 2-year college or university program related to business or accounting.
  • Four years of progressively responsible directly related work experience, with a minimum of one year at the Accounting Associate level or equivalent.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements

Communication

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Accounting fundamentals relating to debits/credits and their relationship to the General Ledger.
  • Standards and practices for establishing and maintaining valid accounting documentation and a credible audit trail.
  • Accounting practices relating to the proofing and balancing of accounts, transactions and/or data entry.
  • Modern office procedures, practices and equipment.

Experience in:

  • Effective oral communication skills to explain, clarify and resolve routine and non-routine issues.
  • Balance/or and reconcile routine accounting transactions and taxpayer accounts.
  • Special projects requiring critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration as part of a project team.
  • Use automated systems and operation of office equipment/software at an acceptable level of proficiency.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with external customers, internal customers, and coworkers.
  • Execute daily operating procedures and internal standards, processes and procedures and the identification of process improvement opportunities.
  • Communication of knowledge of local taxes and reporting.
  • Comply with documentation standards for correspondence (records management).
  • Experience with state and/or local taxes a plus
  • Experience with tax research techniques a plus
  • Experience with technical writing a plus
