Summary

The City of Bellevue’s Neighborhood Traffic Safety Services group responds to citizen inquiries about traffic safety, pedestrian safety, school safety, neighborhood parking issues and traffic calming efforts in Bellevue’s neighborhoods.  Through a variety of programs, staff work to address these concerns and to recommend and implement work plans.

This internship would assist staff in creating outreach publications, planning and executing traffic safety campaigns, and utilizing social media. This position would be responsible for longer term special projects like establishing and implementing a digital filing system to help organize active and non-active projects, but would also be needed to assist with a variety of tasks on an as-needed basis.

This position may be part-time/full-time (15-20 hours/wk or more) during the summer, with the possibility of part-time hours through the school year.



Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, developing, and implementation of outreach processes.
  • Create publications, reports, and templates using various computer programs (Microsoft and Adobe products).
  • Write content for media releases, including social media and the City’s telephone on-hold recordings.
  • Manage the distribution and mailing of various publications.
  • Conduct field work and compile information to update annual reports.
  • Organize project files, both paper and electronic.

 

Qualifications

  • Student’s target degree (communications, marketing, public relations, planning, or traffic engineering) or field of interest should complement the position.
  • Experience using Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Advanced experience in database design, a plus.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collect and analyze information, present conclusions and formulate solutions to problems.
  • Ability to perform independently when clear direction is provided.
  • Ability to complete projects within specified time frames.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels and with the general public.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License.

Definition of a Student Intern

  • Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program. Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
  • During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
  • During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
  • Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
  • At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
