Senior Structural Engineer - City of Redmond ( Job # 13-0039)

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Development Services, this position examines complex plans for new construction, alteration, and repairs to ensure compliance with City and state building codes and national standards; provides technical advice and assistance to architects, engineers, and contractors on code conformance problems and to field inspectors in the interpretation of construction plans; and assists in the resolution of unusually difficult construction code interpretation problems.


This is a limited duration position with benefits. The position is for up to two (2) years.The position will be part-time, 20 hours per week, with prorated benefits.There is the potential in the future that it may become a full-time position. The City of Redmond will create an eligibility list for future openings.


Duties include, but are not limited to: reviewing complex plans and specifications for completeness of information, accuracy, and conformance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations; performing engineering computations to analyze structural members and assemblies for structural integrity and compliance with applicable construction codes; identifying inadequacies found and requiring corrections to be made; investigating the suitability of materials and methods of construction for compliance with construction codes; responding to questions related to construction codes, department policies and procedures; holding conferences with developers, owners, architects, and engineers relating to plan design data, code interpretation, and the resolution of design problems; re-reviewing plans for final approval; and performing other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of:  Principles and practices of structural engineering in the design of reinforced concrete, steel, masonry, and timber buildings and structures; advanced analysis and design concepts including computerized design calculations; current local, state, and national codes, standards, and ordinances; issue resolution and conflict management.

Ability to:  Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies; read and accurately interpret building construction plans and specifications; perform engineering calculations; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; maintain proficiency with code and construction method changes; plan and organize work to meet both short and long-range deadlines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, public officials, City staff, the development community, and design professionals; work independently and as part of a team; keep and maintain accurate records.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and seven (7) or more years of relevant experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) required.

Licenses/Other Requirements:

Valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire. Fulfillment of bargaining unit agreement membership is required within 30 days of hire.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily in an office environment, requiring driving to meetings. Exposure to a variety of weather, traffic, or hazardous conditions may occur while driving or conducting field inspections at construction sites.
