Under the direction of the Adaptive Recreation Program Lead, Assistant Leaders work directly with participants with developmental disabilities of all ages in a recreation setting.  Classes are designed specifically for people with disabilities, as well as inclusive settings in general recreation classes.  Classes vary from sports, fitness, arts, cooking, day programs and afterschool programs, as well as outings to local tourist attractions. This position will assist with activity planning and implementation in classes as well as assist with accommodations for participants with disabilities.

Hours and Duration:

This is a supplemental, year round, part-time position with no benefits. This position will work approximately 4-20 hours per week. Hours vary based on class offerings and enrollment. Hours are available for days, afternoons, and evenings as well as some weekends. Opportunities for additional hours may be available as needed for summer camps and inclusion.  This position is limited to working 1040 hours per calendar year.


Must be enthusiastic, energetic, compassionate, and passionate about working with people with disabilities, as well as have an interest in community recreation.  Good oral and written communication skills with staff, participants, and general public. Computer and Microsoft Office proficient.

Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience equivalent to: High School Diploma and one or more years experience working in a Recreation, Education or related field. Previous experience working in inclusive recreation or education settings and programs specifically designed for people with disabilities is preferred.

Licenses and Requirements:

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age, have a valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire and a driving record that meets City standards.   Must have or obtain valid First Aid and CPR certificates by date of hire. Must pass a background check before hire.

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor recreational environment subject to noise, distractions, seasonal heat, adverse weather conditions periodic interruptions, and potentially stressful situations; moderate lifting up to 50 pounds. This position is not responsible for providing personal services such as feeding, dressing, and toileting.
