This is a temporary position for a heavy duty Mechanical Services Technician. It is responsible for the preventive maintenance and the diagnosis and repair of the city's fleet of heavy duty vehicles and equipment. The technician must be capable of working independently, and in a team environment with numerous interruptions. This is a nine month temporary position, working 40 hours/week 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. This is currently a day shift position. The candidate must be willing to work the night/swing shift.  Additionally, there is occasional on-call and after-hours work involved.  This position reports to the Fleet Operations Supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose diesel and gas engines, including electronic controlled systems.
  • Repair of diesel and gas engines in vehicles, construction, agriculture, and stationary applications.
  • Preventative maintenance inspections following a prescribed format and documentation.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic and air brake systems.
  • Diagnose electrical/electronic systems such as ignition systems, fuel controls, instrument panels; rewire or replace unit as appropriate.
  • Repair of transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, and other automotive components.
  • Repair or replace mechanical parts such as gears, valves, bearings, suspension, interiors, seats, constraint systems, airbags and related components.
  • Diagnose and repair: emission components, anti-lock brake systems, on-board computer systems, fuel injection systems, electrically controlled automatic transmissions.
  • Able to weld (gas and electric), fabricate, and modify equipment and vehicles.
  • Order parts through centralized inventory and complete necessary paperwork to document materials used and repairs made.
  • Make entries into computerized maintenance system, including time, parts, repair codes, and other related information fro tracking and admnistrativei functions.
  • Interface with users of fleet vehicles and equipment to discuss required repairs and work performed.
  • Keep work area clean and shop equipment in good working conditions.

Education Requirements:

Graduate of a technical/apprenticeship program, ASE Certification, and/or a minimum of 5 years journeyman mechanical technician experience.


  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A with air brake. Tanker endorsement may be required.
  • Must be willing to work the night/swing shift, work weekends, and on-call as needed.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license by date of hire.  Must have and maintain a good driving record by City Standards.
  • Must possess or pass ASE certification exams on Automotive and Medium/Heavy truck brakes.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain either a MACS refrigerant recycling certificate or ASE certification in Air Conditioning and Refrigerant Recycling.
  • Ability to work with numerous interruptions.
  • Possess problem solving and judgment skills.
  • Self-starter who is reliable, dependable, flexible and works towards team success.
  • Ability to meet deadlines with minimal comebacks.
  • Ability to adhere to safety procedures, work rules, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge in the diagnostics and repair of Anti-Lock Brake Systems.
  • Experience in fabrication and light welding.
  • Experience with personnel computers, word processing and e-mail.
  • Must own, maintain and have on-site a minimal set of personal tools.
  • Must have a working back ground in repairing heavy equipment, trucks etc.

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
  • Work is done mostly indoors in the vehicle maintenance shop but canidated must be willing to work outdoors when needed.
  • Some remote work associated with vendors, customers, contract administration, and related city functions.
  • Hazard include exposure to traffic, high voltage, heave equipment/machinery, flammable liquids or fuels, noise, and confined space.
  • Use of hand and power tools including lathes, drill & hydraulic press, brake lathes, hoists, electrical testers, jacks and parts cleaning systems.
  • Individuals must have adequate hearing and visual acuity to successfully perform the essential job responsibilities and requirement of the position.
  • After initial 2 months of continuous employment or within the month following the first day of rehire, employee will become a bargaining unit member and pay monthly union dues (current rate is 2.25 times their hourly rate of pay) and initiation dues as required. Union Position, Teamsters Local Union No 763.
