The City of Redmond is in search of a committed, enthusiastic, accomplished and innovative person to join our Team. This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and operation of the City’s Wastewater Collection System which transports wastewater from residences and commercial facilities.  The collection system consists of 220 miles of pipe, nearly 7,000 manhole structures, 23 sewer pump stations, and 15 miles of easements.

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Wastewater Operations Supervisor, the successful candidate will:

  • Locate, install, maintain, repair and inspect sewer mains, manholes, check valves, pumps, and clean-outs
  • Perform hydro-cleaning, mechanical rodding, and system flushing of pipelines
  • Perform condition assessment of manholes and sewer pipes
  • Perform CCTV inspection of mainlines and laterals
  • Respond to emergency calls, customer requests, mainline backups, and overflows
  • Respond to telemetry alarms, mechanical problems, and power-related failures at pump station sites
  • Utilize hydro-jet cleaning equipment, combination vacuum equipment, backhoe/track-hoe, dump trucks, truck and trailer combination, forklift, 2-way radio etc.
  • Conduct traffic control and flagging
  • Hydro excavate to locate pipelines for repair or to locate underground utilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Knowledge of:

  • Sanitary sewer maintenance and repair principles and operational procedures
  • General construction practices and techniques
  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment
  • Design and implementation of proper traffic control plans
  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping and safe work practices

Skill in:

  • Effective and efficient communication
  • Use of hand tools and equipment of the trade
  • Performing basic mechanics
  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans, as-builts, and ladder diagrams
  • Conducting inspections and investigations of wastewater related issues
  • Proficiently using Microsoft Word, Excel, asset management programs, database programs and GIS software is desired.

Ability to:

  • Inspect, operate, repair and maintain wastewater systems and components
  • Provide excellent customer service through positive and professional communication
  • Follow policies, procedures to ensure tasks and equipment are operated safely
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and be an effective team player
  • Accurately record field data manually and by using a variety of software programs
  • Perform Emergency Standby Duty on a rotation basis
  • Work overtime to respond to emergencies as needed, including evenings, holidays, and weekends
Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to a High School diploma AND two (2) years of public utility, maintenance, construction, or other closely related work experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform this job.

Licenses and Requirements:

Valid Washington State Driver’s License is required by date of hire, and a driving record that meets City standards. 

Valid Washington Wastewater Collection Specialist Certification level I, Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsements, Flagging Traffic Control Card, Confined Space Entry and Attendant, and First Aid/CPR certifications are preferred or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed outside and inside, sometimes in inclement weather and in confined spaces. Some portions of pump stations and the collection system are hot, cramped or malodorous. Some surfaces are slippery or have open grates. Employees risk physical hazards from traffic, potentially toxic gases, chemicals and infectious diseases. Incumbents are required to lift up to 75 pounds, climb ladders and stairs, enter 24 inch diameter access openings, bend, twist, squat, stoop, kneel and reach. Position requires manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity.
