Construction Inspector - Public Works - City of Redmond ( Job # 14-0007)

This position is open until filled with preference given to applications received by February 7, 2014.
Under the direction of the Construction Inspection Manager, this position is responsible for inspecting Public Works capital improvement projects. Duties include but are not limited to: reviewing construction plans and specifications; inspecting construction of City streets, bridges, sanitary sewers, storm drains, water systems, City parks, and other City facilities; determining work and material compliance and approving field changes; arranging for materials testing; verifying “record drawings” for accuracy; preparing daily inspection reports and field note records for monthly progress payments; responding to questions and concerns from the public; and performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: Construction practices and methods; WSDOT/FHWA compliance requirements related to construction management of capital improvement projects; engineering, drafting, math, and surveying; soil mechanics and construction materials.
Ability to: Read and interpret contract specifications and engineering drawings; analyze problems and develop workable solutions; make independent judgments and work with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective professional working relationships; communicate persuasively and courteously with City staff, contractors, other agencies and the general public; use computer applications and mobile devices to create daily inspection reports, field notes, pay notes and record drawings. Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. and five (5) years of experience in construction inspection or similar field; desire Associate’s degree in engineering or college level course work in drafting, engineering, math and construction management; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills and abilities. Public Works construction inspection and contract administration experience preferred.
Licenses and Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire with good driving record. Fulfillment of bargaining unit agreement membership is required within 30 days of hire.
Work is performed primarily in the field and requires driving to and from construction sites to conduct field inspections in inclement weather. Some physical hazard in exposure to traffic, heavy equipment and obstacles at construction sites. Lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required.
