There are two GIS Student Intern positions currently available with the Fire Department and the IT Department.  Benefits of these internships include on-the-job training in GIS (Esri) desktop technology and skills, exposure to project management methodologies, as well as web and mobile technologies. Interns are typically required to work 20 hours a week during the school quarter.  During the summer quarter, the Intern will be required to work up to 40 hours a week.

The responsibilities of the intern may vary depending on the department they are employed with.  In the Fire Department, the Intern will be primarily responsible for digitizing information from paper maps and updating supporting attribute tables.  In IT, the Intern will primarily assist with handling ad-hoc requests from customers including updating maps and atlases, performing data/spatial analysis, completing data requests, digitizing data, as well as supporting longer term projects.

Primary Responsibilities (for either department at the City)
  • Complete requests for GIS mapping, analysis, and/or data maintenance such as digitizing data and updating feature classes.
  • Document and track work, keeping Analyst/Supervisor updated on progress.
  • Utilize and update project documentation.
  • Follow industry and team’s best practices and standards for cartography and map/data generation.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and activities.



  • Experience with ESRI’s Desktop GIS software (preferably v10.1) including familiarity with feature class editing, geoprocessing tools, performing spatial and attribute queries and maintaining data.  Intern will be expected to perform these tasks with minimal on-the-job training. 
  • Experience with MS Excel and/or MS Access preferable.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to research projects, summarize and present conclusions.
  • Ability to self-train and trouble-shoot using online resources and adapt to the latest geospatial technologies.
  • Ability to complete project tasks within specified timeframes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the team.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Must be a full-time student in 2014 and continuing through the next academic year.  Candidates will be required to provide documentation validating their full-time student status each quarter (except summer).

Definition of a Student Intern

  • Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program (minimum of 10 graduate credits or 12 undergraduate credits from an accredited university). Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
  • During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
  • During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
  • Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program or credits drop below full time.
  • At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
