Construction Inspector - Planning (Limited Duration) - City of Redmond ( Job # 14-0031)

Under the direction of the Development Services Manager and Lead Construction Inspector, this position is responsible for inspecting construction on City and private infrastructure.  Duties include, but are not limited to: reviewing construction plans and specifications; inspecting construction of transportation, traffic signals, street lighting, bridges, sanitary sewers systems, storm drains, water systems, clearing and grading. Other responsibilities include:  inspection of temporary erosion control in relationship to NPDES permits; inspect work and material compliance and verify field changes; arranging for materials testing; verifying “construction record drawings” for accuracy; preparing daily inspection reports and field note records. Inspectors shall respond to questions and concerns from the public; and perform other duties as assigned.


Limited duration full-time position with benefits.  The position is funded for up to two (2) years.  This pool of applicants may be used for future openings.


Knowledge of: construction practices and methods; WSDOT, MUTCD, NPDES and other compliance requirements related to construction management of City Private Development projects; which shall also include: engineering, drafting, math, and surveying; soil mechanics and construction materials.  Desire a current knowledge of American with Disability Act (ADA).

Ability to:  read and interpret contract specifications and engineering drawings; analyze problems and develop workable solutions; make independent judgments and work with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective professional working relationships; communicate persuasively and courteously with City staff, contractors, other agencies and the general public; use MS Office software (Word, Excel), Adobe Pro and Bluebeam software.  Incumbent should be familiar with Energov permit system or equivalent permit system.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. and five (5) years of experience in construction inspection or similar field; desire Associate’s degree in engineering or college level course work in drafting, engineering, math and construction management; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills and abilities.  Public Works construction inspection and contract administration experience preferred.

Licenses and Requirements:

Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire with good driving record.  Fulfillment of bargaining unit agreement membership is required within 30 days of hire.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily in the field and requires driving to and from construction sites to conduct field inspections in inclement weather.  Some physical hazard in exposure to traffic, heavy equipment and obstacles at construction sites.  Lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required.
