This position falls within the Parks Department Street Tree and Landscape Program, and assists with the maintenance of the City’s Tree Grates. Maintenance Aide I positions are primarily an entry/training level position and requires minimal prior experience.  Employees will receive direct supervision while on the job site.  Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes, and/or operations, and will be performed cooperatively with other employees and completed in a manner that assures individual, co-worker and public safety in all weather and working conditions.  The work is also to be completed with appropriate efficiency and in a manner that commands the respect of or demonstrates appropriate courtesy to, co-workers, and the public.

Hours: 40 hours per week, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Primary Responsibilities
  • Cleaning, maintenance, and repair/removal of street tree grates and tree wells.
  • Other general maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Work safely with landscape tools and equipment in the Right-of-Way.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or a GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid Washington driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record according to City standards. Proof of driving record required at time of interview. Applicants will be disqualified under the following circumstances:

* Violation - more than two moving violations in the preceding three years; or a serious driving violation within the preceding three years (includes but not limited to: reckless or negligent driving, DUI, or driving without a valid license)

* Accidents - more than one motor vehicle accident within the preceding three years for which the applicant received a traffic or criminal citation and was convicted, forfeited bail, or entered a plea of “guilty” or “nolo contendere”.

  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with hand-held power tools and related landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Basic mechanical skills and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to learn to operate safely the equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks, in the Right-of-Way.
  • Ability to listen and understand direction/instruction, effectively communicates with team members, and responds to customers tactfully and courteously.
  • Criminal History check required on applicant selected for position.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in Right-of-Ways.
  • Experience in related landscape or construction industry.

  • The employee will be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately loud.
  • Exposure may include traffic, fumes, chemicals, flying debris, noise. 
  • Employee must be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions and provide own weather-related gear, such as rain gear or warm clothing.  Employees must provide and wear work clothing (tee shirts w/City logo provided) and boots (steel-toed recommended, but not required) appropriate to their duties.  Some tasks require a long-sleeved shirt.


Definition of a Seasonal

  • Must be pre-approved by Human Resources to ensure compliance with the legislation.
  • Regularly scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week for which the customary annual employment is six months or less.
  • "Customary" means that the nature of the position typically lasts for six months or fewer and that the period of employment begins at approximately the same time each year.
  • NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).



Seasonal 3 months, Union Position (Teamsters Local Union No. 763); After initial 2 months of continuous employment or within the month following the first day of rehire, employee will become a bargaining unit member and pay monthly union dues (current rate is 2.25 times their hourly rate of pay) and initiation dues as required.
