Fire Mechanic (Limited Duration) - City of Redmond ( Job # 14-0048)

Analyze equipment malfunctions, accomplish repairs, and perform scheduled maintenance on a variety of standard and specialized automotive and fire apparatus.  Duties include but are not limited to: performing timely and economical inspection, maintenance and repair of assigned apparatus according to NFPA standards; automotive tire repair, mounting and balancing; vehicle up-fitting, mobile air conditioning repair, electrical/electronic system troubleshooting and repairs, welding/fabrication, brake repair, suspension and steering repair;  maintaining records and reports; and performing other duties as assigned.

Testing Process:

The top qualified applicants, as determined by evaluation of application materials, will be invited to participate in a Civil Service testing process consisting of a written test, practical exam and oral interviews.  A Civil Service eligibility list will be created comprised of those individuals who successfully complete the selection process.

Hours and Duration:

Monday – Friday; 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Two (2) year limited duration position with benefits. 


Knowledge of:  diesel and gasoline engines; air and hydraulic braking systems; AC and DC electrical systems; fire apparatus plumbing; transmissions and differentials; fire pumps and generators; fire system interlocks; NFPA standards regarding fire apparatus; industry hazards and safety precautions.

Skill in: maintaining records and preparing written reports; data entry; use of  personal computer and software; and computer diagnostic equipment.

Ability to:  diagnose, repair, and service major and minor mechanical, structural, and electrical fire apparatus defects; organize and prioritize repairs and preventive maintenance service tasks; read and understand manufacturers operational and maintenance manuals; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; provide excellent customer service; work independently and as part of a team; establish and maintain positive working relationships; interpret and explain technical information to non-technical audiences; and remain flexible to changing work priorities.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years experience in heavy duty truck repair required.  Fire apparatus experience desired.  ASE medium/heavy truck certifications required (Master preferred).  Fire Apparatus Technician EVT certification desired.  Copies of certifications will be required.

Licenses and Requirements:

Must possess own hand tools.  Valid Washington State driver’s license by date of hire with good driving record. First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of hire.  Air brake inspector certification within 30 days of hire.   CDL (with air brake endorsement) within 90 days of date of hire. Stryker certification within 90 days of hire.  Mobile air conditioning certification within six months of date of hire.  This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a busy shop environment and in the field, sometimes under emergency conditions. Exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment, solvents and oils. Physical effort required to perform heavy manual labor in uncomfortable and dirty conditions. Heavy lifting required. Overtime available for emergency repairs.
