The City of Redmond is in search of a committed, accomplished and innovative person to join our Team. This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the City’s Streets System.  Our Maintenance Technicians are highly trained employees who have chosen a career serving the public. Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Streets Operations Supervisor or designee, this position operates specialized equipment and performs varied manual work to install, repair and maintain the City’s street system. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Inspect, clean, ramp or grind sidewalks;
  • Conduct pot hole and minor asphalt repair;
  • Inspect, clean, maintain and install street signage;
  • Inspect, maintain and install pavement markings;
  • Design and implement traffic control plans, and conduct traffic control and flagging;
  • Respond to emergency calls, snow and ice, weather related events, and customer requests;
  • Operate street sweeper, loader, bucket lift truck, button truck, dump truck, snow plow, sander and 2-way radio, etc. to repair, maintain, and install components of the street system;
  • Operate boom arm and articulating mowers and power tools used to control vegetation in the right of way;
  • Maintain daily work records, input and manage data, and create reports for internal purposes and regulatory compliance;
  • Assist other City departments with inspections of new construction;
  • Assist with development of policies, procedures, plans and manuals to ensure tasks and equipment are operated safely and properly and in compliance with applicable regulations and specifications.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles, best practice procedures, materials, equipment and tools used in street repair and maintenance activities;
  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping and safe work practices;
  • Construction practices and techniques;
  • Safe and proper handling procedures for use of tools and equipment.

Skill in:

  • Inspect, repair and maintain the Street systems assets;
  • Operate specialized equipment related to maintenance and repair activities;
  • Minor maintenance of equipment;
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, plans and as-builts;
  • Collect and organize facts and data, both orally and in writing;
  • Effective and efficient communication;
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions in the English language;
  • Operate a computer and various software programs (MS Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel etc.

Ability to:

  • Follow policies, procedures to ensure tasks and equipment are operated safely;
  • Exercise sound judgment and effectively problem solve;
  • Accurately record field data manually and by using a variety of software programs;
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, a high level of initiative, effort and commitment;
  • Effectively work independently and as part of a team;
  • Provide excellent customer service through positive and professional communication;
  • Perform Emergency Standby Duty on a rotation basis;
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis;
  • Work overtime as needed, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to a High School diploma AND one (1) year of  street maintenance, construction, or other closely related work experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform this job.

Licenses and Requirements:

Valid Washington State Driver’s License is required by date of hire, and a driving record that meets City standards.  Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement, Flagging Traffic Control Card, Signs and Markings Level I, and First Aid/CPR certifications are preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months. This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed outside sometimes in inclement weather. Employees risk physical hazards from traffic. Incumbents are required to lift up to 75 pounds, bend, twist, squat, stoop, kneel and reach. Position requires manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity.

Fulfillment of bargaining unit membership is required within 30 days of hire.
