911 Dispatch (experienced) - On Call - City of Issaquah ( Job # 17-0038)

Summary

The City of Issaquah is currently accepting applications to create an eligibility list for the position of part time experienced Communications Specialists to augment our workforce during periods of staffing restraints.  Communications Specialists receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch police and provide clerical support for Police Department operations. Communications Specialists exercise considerable judgment and decision-making in handling emergency requests and sensitive matters.

20 hours per week - variable

 

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years experience dispatching for a Police agency.   
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • Word processing/computer experience
  • Typing 40 wpm minimum
  • Minimum standards of 70% accuracy on clerical skills, i.e., grammar and spelling
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and work well with the public in person and on the phone
  • Must believe in teamwork and participatory management, and have strong commitment to excellence
  • Previous experience of sufficient length to prove competency in this skill area is desired
  • Must be able to pass a Police background check

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Access Level 1 required
  • Telecommunicator 1 & 2 desired

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates multi-frequency radio console to communicate with Police Officers, fire personnel, public works staff and other emergency responders as appropriate.
  • Receives calls on a multi-line phone console and E911 system, gathers necessary information and alerts appropriate responders; answers routine calls for service, questions and other administrative calls; refers to appropriate agency or person as necessary.
  • Operates the following computer systems:  A Centralized Computerized Enforcement Service System (ACCESS), Spillman Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Records Management System (RMS) and Positron Power Phone System.
  • Monitors building fire alarms, phone alarms, generator alarms, and panic alarms.
  • Monitors building and jail security system including access control to and from the facility.
  • Maintains computerized logs, reports and filing systems regarding case reports, vehicle impounds, weekend construction permits and mutual aid as received by the Police Department.
  • Inquires, locates and sends administrative messages related to court orders, warrants, stolen vehicles, property and missing persons in the ACCESS system. 
  • Accepts, safe keeps and releases lost and found property.
     
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Knowledge of various computer software programs, and the ability to learn new programs as necessary.
  • Ability to maintain composure and control under adverse conditions and to cope with the calls and contacts firmly, courteously, confidentially, tactfully and with respect for the rights of citizens.
  • Ability to Multi-task.
  • Ability to type 40 wpm accurately.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and officials.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a confined environment either alone or with another dispatcher for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work 12 hour shifts – either 0600-1800 or 1800-0600
