Summary

The City of Kirkland, WA is seeking a motivated limited-term Accountant in the Finance and Administration Department. The position will initially be a 0.75 FTE (30 hours per week), with the possibility of increasing to 1.0 FTE. This position currently has an anticipated end date of December 31, 2018. This role is a great opportunity to learn and perform a broad range of functions for the Accounting Operations and Financial Planning Divisions.

As an entry-level Accountant, the position will train with Senior Accountants and Budget Analysts and support them with Citywide accounting functions, audits, financial reporting and budget planning activities.  In addition, the position will support the implementation of the City’s new Finance/HR System, which will go live in phases starting 2018.  The position will report to the Deputy Director in Finance in charge of the system implementation, with oversight from the both Accounting Operations and Financial Planning managers.

This position requires fundamental knowledge of accounting functions with a strong interest in financial planning.  Knowledge of public sector fund accounting is a plus.  The position requires sound knowledge of MS Excel, and the MS Office Suite in general, keen attention to detail, and flexibility to work as needed to meet deadlines.  Some of the principle job responsibilities for this role will include but not limited to:

  1. Support Senior Accountants in preparing the City’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, financial statement schedules and notes.
  2. Provide technical assistance and training to departments in accounting related matters, including grants.
  3. Review City revenues and expenditures for compliance with City policy, legal and accounting parameters.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Two years of professional level accounting experience with an automated financial management system.  Financial planning experience is a plus.
Position Details

The incumbent will be eligible for the City's full benefit package, with the City paying for 75% of the premiums: medical/dental vision for employee and dependents, deferred compensation plan, 2x annual salary life insurance, vacation and sick leave accruals, paid holidays, free on-site parking, on site work-out facility.

Work is conducted in a typical office setting.

Union Affiliation

As a condition of employment, must become a member of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union (AFSCME) within 30 days of employment or meet alternate regulations as set forth in the Agreement between the Union and the City.
