Looking for a new opportunity in Public Works Maintenance? Join the Utilities or Streets and Grounds Divisions as a Senior Maintenance Person at the City of Kirkland!

The City of Kirkland, Washington, is located on the northeastern shoreline of Lake Washington east of Seattle. Regionally recognized as a City with a small town feel, a sense of history, and a strong appreciation for quality of life, Kirkland has a population of approximately 84,000 and a land area of eighteen square miles and provides utility related services to approximately 48,000 customers. The City is currently looking for additional Senior Maintenance staff in the Utility Division of Public Works.

The Senior Maintenance Person may be assigned responsibilities in any one or more of the water, sewer, street, or drainage operations, maintenance, or construction categories. Depending on the assignment, representative duties of the position include:

  • A variety of skilled and semi-skilled services involving the City’s water, sewer, street, and drainage systems
  • Coordinating field activities at a crew level
  • Willingness and ability to respond to off-hour emergency situations affecting the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Kirkland
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain and monitor inventory of parts and tools
  • Other duties or assignments as required by supervisor

Skills & Abilities
  1. Ability to operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to: backhoe, loader, street sweeper, vactor/sewer jet, grader, dozer and dump trucks.
  2. Excellent knowledge of common hand and power tools is required.
  3. Ability to organize and lay out work at the job site.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  5. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and maps.
  6. Ability to successfully coordinate field crew activities in the absence of Lead or Supervisor
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of four years utility and street construction/maintenance required – equivalent experience considered.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and current Class A combination with air and tanker endorsement.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy (up to 50 pounds) bulky objects.
  • Must be a Certified Flagger in the State of Washington.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of common safety regulations and rules pertinent to work area safety and confined space entry.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications for position include:

  • Knowledge and experience with Municipal Operations
  • Underground Utility construction experience
  • Drainage operations knowledge

Working Conditions & Physical Activities

Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather. Must be willing to work around the physical hazards of working from heights, operating heavy equipment, climbing in and out of trenches, and working in heavy traffic.
