If so, we have just the job for you! The City of Mercer Island is looking for self motivated, safety conscious and enthusiastic leaders to manage our beach front and lifeguard team!

This is a temporary employee position reporting to the Recreation Supervisor.  The Beach Manager is responsible for the supervision and training of a staff of temporary lifeguards and the supervision and safety of the public at the city’s swimming beaches.  Primary duties include guarding assigned beach area, educating the staff and public to promote safe recreation at the beach, scheduling guards, purchasing equipment, conducting in-service trainings, enforcing safety rules and responding to all emergency situations in an appropriate manner, assisting in the maintenance of grounds and buildings of the beach site, and keeping all lifeguard and lifesaving and first aid equipment in good repair and ready for use. The Beach Manager must be able to develop a staff team and work independent of direct supervision.  This employee needs to be responsible, trustworthy, and able to deal appropriately with staff, the public and difficult situations.  The Beach Manager may be required to work special events, split shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.  This position manages multiple beach sites.

APPROX. HOURS: up to 40 hrs. a week June-September 8, 2018 (assist in hiring April-May)
SALARY: $18.00-$20.00 per hour (Depending on experience.)

Essential Functions

• Ensure that the public and staff are educated in the rules and policies of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department and that the staff enforces these rules and policies.
• Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, supervise and train all lifeguards assigned to the beach staff.
• Serve in the roll of lifeguard as needed.
• Perform water rescues, using appropriate equipment and in compliance with training standards and Department policies and procedures.
• Conduct all in-service training and keep accurate records of all in-service training.
• Prepare lifeguard work schedules according to staffing requirements.
• Authorize time sheets of lifeguarding staff.
• Maintain and complete assigned charts and reports in a timely manner.
• Evaluate the job performance of each lifeguard on an ongoing basis and keep the Recreation Supervisor informed of performance issues when they occur.
• Complete written work performance evaluations of each lifeguard and review these evaluations with each staff member.  Submit signed evaluations to supervisors at mid-season and at the end of the beach season.
• Prevent accidents and injuries. 
• Observe beach and water areas for unsafe situations or problems and report any unsafe situations or conditions.
• Immediately report any damage or incidents in a timely manner to the Recreation Supervisor using appropriate procedures and forms.
• Immediately report any emergencies to the Public Safety Department and promptly inform Supervisor.
• Wear the designated uniform.
• Provide a high level of customer service for patrons and staff.
• Inspect beach guarding and recreational equipment on a regular basis.
• Inventory and turn in all beach guarding and recreational equipment at the end of the season.
• Attend aquatic meetings or workshops as needed.
• Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.
• Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

• Possess and maintain certification in Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED. 
• Possess Lifeguard Training Instructor (LGI) or obtainable prior to start. (preferred)
• At least 2 years of previous experience.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to work effectively in a supervisory role as a member of a team and effectively communicate knowledge of aquatic programs and safety procedures. 
• Must show an ability to work cooperatively with other staff and be able to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
• Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
• Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

Work is performed outdoors around, over and in the water to include water rescue of individuals.  Exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods of time is likely.  Must be able to work outdoors for 4-8 hours in all kinds of weather conditions, be able to hear calls for help and see troubled swimmers or beach users, be able to lift 20-40 lbs., be able to operate a telephone for emergency communications with Public Safety staff, and must be able to navigate steep slopes quickly.  Work activities involve combinations of sitting, standing, walking and swimming.  May work non-standard workweeks and shifts, to include split shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
