The City of Issaquah invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Public Works Maintenance Worker I or II, depending on qualifications. Individuals in this position perform the regular and recurring maintenance, installation, and repair work of the water, street, storm water, and sewer systems.  As a member of the Public Works Operations Department, the incumbent would join a group responsible for keeping the City running.  Day and night our crews are keeping roads clean, plowing snow, providing clean water, maintaining signals, and managing stormwater.  Work is performed cooperatively and in a manner that ensures individual, co-worker, and public safety. 

Candidates will be selected from an established pool of applicants generated from this and prior postings.

Candidates will be required to complete a test prior to moving forward in the process and qualified applicants must submit a driving abstract for review.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; AND
  • Six months of experience in road/utility construction and maintenance, or related work. 
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Special Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • In some positions incumbents will be required to perform manual labor which may include digging ditches, lifting and carrying heavy materials, frequent walking or standing, and working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  Applicants must be able to bend, stoop, and lift up to 80 pounds.

Licenses Required:

  • A valid Washington Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations
  • CDL with a Class A endorsement. Applicants without a CDL must have the ability to obtain this certification within six months of employment.

Minimum Age:

  • 18 years of age

Background Check and Pre-Employment Physical:

  • Applicants selected for these positions must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance equipment, construction, and repair methods and procedures.
  • Safety standards and precautions related to the work.

Ability to:

  • Use the mechanical tools, hand tools, and equipment of the trade.
  • Read, write, and comprehend the English Language.
  • Understand and follow written and oral directions.
  • Work cooperatively in a work crew.
  • Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions, and in dirty, uncomfortable conditions.
  • Sustain continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulation of, and heavy lifting of departmental equipment.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and within one half hour when on call.
Essential Job Functions
  • Uses a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, jackhammers, welders, air compressors and concrete saws.
  • Installs or repairs main water and sewer lines, manholes and catch basins.
  • Operates most departmental heavy equipment, including backhoe, loaders, dump truck, paver, roller, mower, jet truck, snowplow, and sander trucks.
  • Performs recurring inspection of sanitary sewer lines, manholes and sewer drain field.
  • Operates Vactor truck and video inspection equipment. 
  • Handles and applies hazardous materials in accordance with state regulations.
  • Maintains roadways, including filling potholes, paving and sweeping. Fabricates and installs signs.
  • Makes service connections to water mains, and installs valves, lateral water lines, blow-offs, hydrants and meters.
  • Takes readings on water meters; repairs meters as necessary.
  • Overhauls and repairs fire hydrants.
  • Applies herbicides, and other chemicals to roadside areas and grounds.
  • Performs basic carpentry and cement work, oxyacetylene cutting and burning, and painting as necessary to accomplish primary activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
