Recreation Aide - Specialized Recreation - City of Issaquah ( Job # 18-0081)

Summary

The City of Issaquah has an exciting opportunity for a part-time Recreation Aide, leading our Specialized Recreation Programs!  The City of Issaquah has long recognized parks and recreation as an integral part of the city and essential to the quality of life of its citizens.   In this role, the chosen candidate will provide instruction and oversee a variety of recreational programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.  Activities include classes, trips, and events that aim to enrich the lives of the program participants.

Parks and Recreation's Vision: To connect residents and visitors to nature and each other through a vibrant parks and trails system within the City, neighborhoods and regional lands that provide recreation and outdoor activities for a balanced, healthy and inclusive mountain, lake and valley community.

Applicants will be required to undergo a criminal background screen and submit an employment driving abstract for review prior to hire. 

 

Essential Functions
  • Plans and instructs activities, trips, and classes in area of specialty; oversees and evaluates the work of volunteers.
  • Assures proper set up of facility and safety of program participants; ensures proper procedures are followed in program activities, both with regard to safety and program goals.
  • Shows creativity and innovation in planning and implementation of programs and special events.
  • Ensures proper behavior on the part of program participants; takes disciplinary action as needed; responds quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents; prepares reports related to incidents.
  • Coordinates program activities with other agencies and jurisdictions as needed.
Other Job Duties
  • Prepares a variety of reports, maintains records, processes forms, collects fees, and performs other administrative support tasks.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner, providing information within the scope of knowledge or refers to appropriate individual.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Training:

Minimum qualifications: Graduation from high school (or GED) and a minimum of one year recreation work experience related to specific programming discipline(s) of position; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.

Preferred qualifications: An Associate's Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or related field (or equivalent experience), and two years of full time recreation work experience managing programs; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • A valid Washington State driver's license with a driving record free from serious or frequent violations is required.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain upon hire.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of effective safety standards and precautions related to recreational programs.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional methods and techniques related to area of specialty.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and guide community recreation program activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work weekends, or other irregular hours as necessary.
