Summary

Do you want to make a difference in your community? Look no further! The City of Issaquah Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a full time Recreation Aide - Aquatics for the Julius Boehm Pool. Positions in this class provide instruction for swim lessons, safety classes, water aerobics and other classes and events in aquatics. The work includes carrying out program activities and lifeguarding open swim, swim team, and special events. It also provides support to creative, design, instructional, promotional and clerical duties of the Pool's diverse program offerings. The work requires excellent communication and human relations skills due to considerable public contact. 

Must be able to pass a criminal background history check.
Must be able to swim and sit or stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to see and hear and tolerate loud environments.

Must complete skills assessment prior to employment.
Must pass a pre-employment physical. 


Essential Functions:
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed in programmed activities, both with regard to safety and program guidelines.
  • Instruct classes in swim lessons, water safety, water aerobics or other classes/events.
  • Ensure proper behavior on the part of program participants; respond quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents.
  • Lead and instruct program participants in the rules and proper participation in games and various recreational activities.
  • Provide leadership to part-time non-regular employees.
  • Oversee operations of the pool as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education and Training:

Graduation from high school (or GED) and a minimum of one year recreation work experience related to Aquatics or related field of recreation or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
  • Valid certification in American Red Cross or equivalent in Lifeguarding must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.

Must be able to Obtain within One Year:

  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification
  • Water Aerobics Certification

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of aquatic program activity.
  • Knowledge of effective safety standards and precautions related to aquatics.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and techniques related to aquatics.
  • Ability to assist in instructional tasks.
  • Ability to perform administrative tasks such as: record keeping, report preparation, and the like.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain detailed program records.
  • Ability to work some weekends, or other irregular hours as necessary.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees, agencies and the public.
Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily at the Julius Boehm Pool.  Work requires active participation in program activities, requiring varying degrees of physical exertion.
