An internship with the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department is designed to provide quality training and practical experiences in a wide variety of recreation program areas and to introduce interns to the operational procedures of a Parks and Recreation Department.  Applicants in the Recreation Services program will have first priority. 

# OF OPEN POSITIONS:  ONE (1) General Recreation: special events, youth, and athletics

APPROX. HOURS:            Up to 40 hrs. per week, June (flexible start date)-end of August

SALARY:                            $12-14/hour Non-Exempt – Temporary Position

PROS TO WORKING IN PARKS & RECREATION

  • Gain experience in “behind the scenes” aspects of a Parks & Recreation Department.

  • Ability to shadow a variety of different position within the Parks & Recreation department.

General Responsibilities

Assist in organizing, coordinating, implementing and supervising a variety of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation programs, camps, events and office work under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor; Adventure Playground, Music in the Park, and Camps.  This internship will also gain experience working with sport leagues and other recreation programs and activities.  Will be required at times to work split shifts, weekends, evenings and/or holidays.

Essential Job Functions
  • Serve as a site or event coordinator for various special events, activities, and programs including Adventure Playground.
  • Assist in specific recreation program areas such as camps, classes, or special events.
  • Assists in program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Assists with design and distribution of promotional pieces such as flyers, brochures, signs and posters.  Microsoft Office and graphic software skills preferable.
  • Must show the ability to work cooperatively with other staff and be able to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Provide a high level of customer service for patrons and staff.
  • Attends staff meetings and other meetings as instructed.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record.
  • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements
  • Enrolled in college/university with sophomore standing or above and be able to receive college credit for this internship. Sports Management, Recreation Services or related major. 
  • Knowledge of recreation and physical education necessary to offer a variety of activities to the public.
  • Must have experience in Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Publisher, Word and Excel.
  • Experience in graphic design programs such as Photoshop is a plus.
  • Have current First Aid and CPR certifications or be able to obtain prior to the start of the internship.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington Sate driver's license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
  • Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

This position works indoors and outdoors with a wide variety of age groups from preschool through senior citizens in a variety of recreational activities.  Must be able to physically play and demonstrate games, work with arts and crafts materials, work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, lift 20-50 lbs., and able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.  May work non-standard workweeks and shifts to include split shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
