Summary

Under the direction of the Parks Lead Maintenance Worker, this part time position with the City of Kenmore is responsible for a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks with in a specific area of the Public Works Department.  The primary responsibilities include opening parks and cleaning parks restrooms on weekend days.  Hours of work are expected to be 5 hours on each Saturday and Sunday and 8 hours on one weekday for a total of up to 18 hours per week.The position requires a general knowledge of landscape maintenance and operations, cleaning methods, procedures and techniques, and the ability to use hand tools, power tools, light duty vehicles and equipment. Because of the small number of City employees, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties as may be required from time to time.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of  unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the area of assignment.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of City parks grounds, restrooms, and facilities.
  • Perform landscape maintenance tasks, including weeding, edging, trimming, blowing, raking, etc.
  • Treat ice and snow on sidewalks and walkways.
  • May operate and maintain a variety of equipment, hand and power tools; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes and report safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Complete work according to specific work orders.
  • Respond to emergencies as directed.
  • Complete required daily logs, timesheets and reports.
  • Pick up and deliver equipment, materials, parts and supplies as required.
  • Ensure regular, predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Courteously respond to complaints and inquiries. Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in performing landscape maintenance.
  • Basic tools and equipment used in parks, facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • Basic cleaning methods, procedures and techniques with knowledge of materials, supplies and equipment.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and facility locations.
  • Proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals using in the workplace.

Ability to perform all the responsibilities and duties of the position including:

  • Perform work using safe working methods and procedures including the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment according to standard operation and safety procedures.
  • Identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective action.
  • Working independently and using initiative within established procedural guidelines.

  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Duties are performed in outdoor work environments at facilities, right of ways, and parks which will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, noise, dust, mud, moving vehicles or machines, chemical cleaning agents and toxic odors.

Outside work requires operation of motorized vehicle to perform work.

  • Perform a variety of semi- skilled building and grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Position may be subject to callback during emergencies on a 24 hour basis and may be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
  • Requires hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Requires dexterity of hand and finger movement to operate keyboard; visual acuity at 20 inches or less; and hearing acuity for speech discrimination.
  • Standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Climb ladders and work from heights.
  • Must be able to bend at the waist, kneel and crouch.
  • Must have the physical ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs and carry objects with both hands and arms
  • Must be able to perform moderately medium to heavy manual activities.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, elected officials and the general public.
Education and Experience

This position requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum one year previous experience involving the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.

Licences and Certificates

A physical assessment test will be a post offer condition of employment.

A valid Washington State driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.  Additional trainings and certifications may be required at the City’s request.

Successful candidate must agree to criminal background check prior to hire.
