Summary

GENERAL PURPOSE

The IT Support Technician is responsible for assisting City staff and elected officials with computer problems requiring troubleshooting and problem analysis.

This position also assists the Information Systems Manager with ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of the City’s computer and telecommunication networks including software and hardware, supporting business applications, and linking the City’s various departments and facilities. As part of a small team, this position collaborates with the IT team, providing solutions and excellent customer service to city staff.



SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The IT Support Technician works under the direct supervision of the Information Systems Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the overall operation of the information technology function of the City.
  • Installs and configures computers, phones, printers, and computer and telephone peripherals.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on desktop computers and computer and telephone peripherals. Recommends and implements solutions to ensure minimum delay and effective operation for system users.
  • Provides high-quality, detailed technical support and troubleshooting with an emphasis on customer satisfaction.
  • Provides instructions to new and existing employees on features, capabilities, and policies of systems used (both computer and telephone-based)
  • Assists employees with utilizing application software and creating and/or modifying various queries to meet business process needs.
  • Stays current with developments and changes in Information Technology.
  • Reviews and tests new hardware and software applications for potential use by city departments.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Operation and configuration of a variety of computer hardware, software, and related data communication systems.
  • Practices, methods and procedures of computer hardware and software installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Current developments in Information Technology.
  • Experience working in a Microsoft Windows server/client environment, experience with Group Policy is desirable.
  • Principles and practices of programming and systems analysis.
  • Computer and networking theory, design, and application.
  • Data and voice communication concepts, methods, and security issues.
  • Standard office procedures.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Develop, install, maintain, and repair information and telecommunications systems.
  • Provide training to City staff and officials.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Explain complex information and procedures to employees and officials lacking technical knowledge.
  • Interact professionally with various levels of employees, officials, and customers.
  • Prepare complex reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of all sensitive files and materials accessed, discussed, or observed while in the performance of duties.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems.
  • Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft server products such as Active Directory, Exchange, Office365, Azure, SQL Server, and SCCM is desirable.
  • Experience with Sophos antivirus, Palo Alto Networks Firewalls, Cisco IOS, Mitel PBX, VMware V6 and Veeam is desirable.
  • Experience with the support and maintenance of enterprise-grade production systems is desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified MCSE/CompTIA or an equivalent of three years of experience implementing and managing network computer systems.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications systems and concepts, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current experience working with and detailed knowledge of current and/or applicable operating systems and applications is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Washington State Driver’s license is required, with driving record free from serious or frequent violations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical effort is needed to move, lift and carry office materials, supplies, and equipment up to 50 pounds. Basic communication skills such as talking, seeing, and hearing are needed for frequent person-to-person contact and telephone usage. Use of hands and fingers to handle objects and control automated equipment and office machines, using finger dexterity. This position further requires continuous hand and finger movement in confined spaces using precision tools and equipment with visual acuity at twenty inches or less.

Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Necessary aptitudes include understanding instructions, numerical aptitude, problem solving, initiative, analytic ability, memory, concentration, and judgment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in an indoor office setting with extended periods at a computer and occasional travel between city buildings and work stations.
