Summary

The City of Gig Harbor is seeking eight (8) Seasonal Workers to support the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department - Operations. We are looking for individuals who care about making the City a better place by assisting with maintaining city streets, drainage and sewer facilities; water system; parks; cleaning and sanitizing public restrooms within City parks and other duties that are equally important to the residents and guests of our beautiful City. This position may be required to work on weekends.

Season: Mid-April through Mid-September. We would encourage you to apply if you can work the majority of this seasonal timeframe.

Hiring Range: $16.00/hour - $18.00/hour depending on previous years of experience at The City of Gig Harbor

GENERAL SUMMARY

Interviews will be held in phases, starting in May 2018, for positions running from mid May - mid September.  This position is a temporary season work assignment and training will be provided to successful candidates. Assignments may vary and work is performed under immediate supervision while the employees learn tasks and properly carry out assignments as directed. Work is evaluated on: safe work habits, ability to work without constant supervision, willingness to perform assigned tasks, punctuality and dependability, self-motivation, ability to get along with co-workers, supervisors and other City employees as well as their individual contribution to the goals of the City.

Pay will be dependent upon individual qualifications and prior experience related to this position.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties:

The work involves physical manual labor while performing road repair, preventative maintenance and traffic control (flagging) tasks.  Employees will operate a City vehicle and miscellaneous light equipment and practice good safety habits. 

  • Performs parks and grounds maintenance functions; cleaning restrooms, applying beauty bark, weeding landscaped areas, washing vehicles, preparing for painting, maintaining buildings.
  • Cleans roadside ditches, culverts and catch basins.
  • Assists in the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, water system and storm system.  
  • Cutting brush, weeds, and bushes; planting, transplanting; weeding; maintain trees, shrubs and flower beds as directed.
  • Mowing, raking, shoveling, pruning and using various hand tools.
  • Performs flagging and traffic control.
  • Assists in providing support to special events.
  • Once trained, may operates hand tools, compressors, pneumatic tools, paint equipment, power tools, and other tools needed to complete tasks.
  • Once trained, may operate a wide variety of light equipment such as light duty trucks, mowers, backpack blowers, weed eaters, sod cutters, edgers, chain saw, and flatbed trucks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Equipment used in area of assignment.
  • Basic safety precautions.
  • First Aid/CPR.
  • Flagging procedures.
  • Ability to appear for scheduled work with regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Maintain cooperative, effective and productive working relationships.
  • Learn and implement procedural and technical instructions.
  • Work positively as a member of a team.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle and other equipment.
  • Physically perform the assign duties and essential functions of the position.  

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is primarily performed in a City Public Works Shop or field, depending on assignment.
  • All positions require clear speaking and hearing sufficient to communicate effectively and respond appropriately in-person, over the phone and two-way radio.
  • Potentially hazardous conditions may be present for some positions when traveling to off-site locations or working in roadways or field locations.
  • All positions typically require: reaching, handling/grasping documents or materials, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, walking short distances, vision sufficient to read source materials or computer screen data and repetitive motions for computer or hand tool use.
  • All positions require exertion of force of 20 pounds occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently to lift/carry/move objects, files, and other material.
  • Some field positions may require lifting/carrying/moving objects or materials up to 90 pounds.
  • All physical exertion is performed under the supervision of a regular Public Works employee who provides on-site training or assistance to ensure appropriate safety precautions.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; and
  • High School Diploma or GED (or upon hire, if currently in High School); and
  • Valid driver license and safe driving record.
  • Successful candidates must submit a copy of a current driving record/abstract and obtain a valid Washington State Driver License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

  • This position is considered a seasonal temporary.
  • The City of Gig Harbor will supply you with all safety gear and replacement of gear as needed.
  • Classified as eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
