Maintenance Worker I - Streets (2 positions) - City of Sammamish ( Job # 19-0024)

Perform asphalt patching and cement work including but not limited to sidewalk replacement, roadways and projects. Perform basic carpentry, stormwater system maintenance, repair and installation. Maintain service and make minor repairs to equipment as needed. Remove weeds and debris from City right-of-ways and stormwater facilities. Operate a range of equipment including but not limited to City vehicles, machinery, and a variety of hand and power tools. May perform duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas as required or assigned. Observe and maintain established safety policies and procedures. This position is eligible to earn overtime for hours worked over forty (40) per workweek if approved in advance by a supervisor.


Work under the general supervision of the Streets & Stormwater Maintenance Superintendent. Technical and field leadership is provided by the Maintenance Lead and Maintenance Worker II’s.

  • Perform routine tasks such as right-of-way litter and garbage removal, hot and cold asphalt placement, right-of-way vegetation control, pick up and disposal of road kill, and snow and ice prep/control. Maintenance shop, vehicle and equipment up-keep.
  • Assist in maintenance projects such as concrete work, traffic control, stormwater systems installation/maintenance, roadway grind and patch, hazardous tree removal and street signs and markings installation.


  • Get along with others and work as a member of a team.
  • Learn general principles of right-of-way maintenance including concrete, asphalt, drainage repairs and vegetation control.
  • Identify work hazards and practice general safety procedures.
  • Use patience, tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealing with the public and other employees.
  • Communicate information effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work independently without direct supervision in the field.
  • Ability to prioritize work, exercise independent judgment, use common sense and initiative
  • Safely operate light-duty trucks, hand mowers and a variety of hand tools used in maintenance.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in traffic control and emergency situations.



Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform in the following areas: streets maintenance, concrete construction, traffic control and or stormwater systems. Ability to pass pre-employment background check.



Equipment such as, light duty trucks; blowers and string trimmers; shovels, rakes, etc.

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of maintenance equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. Work is performed primarily in field settings. The employee must lift and/or move up to 60 pounds (occasionally more) and perform a variety of physical tasks and heavy labor. Duties are performed primarily outdoors in a variety of terrains, under a variety of weather conditions, including sun, rain, wind, mud, and snow, for periods of approximately eight hours/day. Duties are frequently performed working as part of a work team but may sometimes be performed alone. Conditions at work sites might include falling objects, loose footings, loud noises, construction equipment, and working in right-of-way, traffic, or roadways.


Work schedule includes evenings and weekends.  Must be 18 years or older.  Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s license and good driving record is required at hire.  Possession of a valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s Class B license, or ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months of hire, is required (the City provides CDL training). Ability to acquire and maintain the following certifications; 24-hour HAZWAPOR, Washington State Traffic Control Flagger, and First Aid CPR/AED within (1) year of hire is required. A Washington State Public Operators Pesticide License is required within twelve (12) months of hire. All required licenses and certifications must be kept current.  The employee is required to wear safety-toed boots while working.  Applicants are subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol tests and possible physical examinations. Proper documentation to fulfill the requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act within three (3) days of employment is a condition of employment with the City of Sammamish.  Completed City of Sammamish application is required.
