THE CITY OF GIG HARBOR is currently looking to fill the position of BUILDING INSPECTOR.  This is a professional position involving plan review and inspection of construction projects and enforcement of the construction codes adopted under Chapter 15 of the Gig Harbor Municipal Code. This person will work with permit applicants, contractors, and design professionals in a cooperative and timely manner to assure that projects are in compliance with the city’s building, fire, plumbing, mechanical, energy, and fuel gas codes and ordinances. Duties include consultation with developers on code requirements prior to permit application and during the construction process; review of plans, specifications and calculations for compliance with code requirements; and inspection of work to verify compliance with adopted codes and approved plans and specifications.  The work is performed independently within established policies and procedures.

Hiring Range: $30.91 per hour - $34.77 per hour.

Under the direct supervision of the Building Official/Fire Marshal the incumbent exercises considerable latitude and independence in completion of responsibilities and assignments.  Performance is monitored and evaluated by the Building Official/Fire Marshal.



  • Consults with the public, designers, and the construction industry on general and project specific construction code related requirements.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, calculations and other submittal documents for compliance with Chapter 15 of the Gig Harbor Municipal Code.
  • Performs field inspections of construction work to verify compliance with code requirements and the approved plans and specifications.
  • Investigates work being conducted without an approved permit and issues stop work orders for such work when appropriate.
  • Prepares clear, concise requests for additional information, correction reports, and inspection notes on projects under review and construction.
  • Maintains accurate reports and records of plan review and inspection activities.
  • A valid Washington State driver’s license and a history of safe driving is an essential duty of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • In-depth Knowledge of all types of building construction, materials and methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of building, fire, plumbing, mechanical, and energy codes.
  • General knowledge of planning and zoning codes related to building construction and the legal aspects of code enforcement.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, calculations related to building, plumbing, mechanical, energy, and ventilation systems and relate them to actual site conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret code provisions and their intent in a rational and consistent manner while applying common sense in their application.
  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication to convey information to the public and to prepare technical papers and reports for City staff, administration and Council use. 
  • Ability to use a computer for preparing documents, keeping records, data entry, e-mail communication and accessing information from the internet.
  • Ability to create and maintain an effective working relationship with the general public, development community, city employees and officials and other allied agency personnel.

Work is performed in an office environment as well as out-of-doors.  A moderate amount of local travel is involved in daily activities.  Incumbent is exposed to occasional inclement weather and normal transportation and construction activity as well as occasional emergency scene operations. High noise levels, moving vehicles and machinery, dust and mud, and traversing exposed and sometimes insecure walkways and platforms, unstable and damaged structures and hazardous environments are additional possible exposures.   The use of protective clothing and equipment such as a hardhat, protective eyewear, gloves, coveralls, safety footwear, and foul weather gear is required.  Work requires some physical exertion such as climbing, walking over rough surfaces and loose materials, crouching, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting light to moderately heavy items.  Position requires average physical agility and dexterity.

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and;
  • Minimum of two (2) years of full time increasingly responsible work experience in construction plan review and/or inspection of construction projects and;
  • either ICC certification as a Building Plans Examiner or Building Inspector at the time of hire, and must obtain both certifications within one year of hire.
