Grounds Technician - Public Grounds Division- Public Works - City of Kirkland ( Job # 19-0150)

Minimum Salary: $25.10 per hour
Maximum Salary: $31.46 per hour

Summary

The City of Kirkland is seeking to hire a Grounds Technician in the Public Grounds Division of the Public Works department. The Grounds Technician operates a variety of equipment and performs labor under varied supervision to contribute to the development and maintenance of City right-of-ways (R.O.W.s) and public grounds.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Responsible for landscaping, turf and tree maintenance of City properties and R.O.W.s using elementary level skills of pruning, transplanting, planting, irrigation,drainage, pesticide application, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, sweeping, blowing and edging.
  2. Responsible for cleanliness and orderly appearance of City owned R.O.W.s, public grounds, paths/trails, street medians and facilities.
  3. May be asked to assist in other divisions of Public Works operation and maintenance.

Essential Position Duties
  • Performs service on mowers, other equipment and tools.
  • Landscape design and maintenance of City properties -- planting and transplanting trees, vegetation, and shrubbery.  Prunes trees and shrubs and is familiar with ANSI 300 standards.
  • Helps in the installation and repair of City properties using elementary level skills of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, cement finishing and mechanical skills.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Assists in installation and maintenance of brick and cement walkways, fountains, stairways and benches. 
  • Operates vehicles, equipment and a variety of hand and small power tools as required to support R.O.W/grounds operations.
  • Performs landscape maintenance of City's facilities.
  • Performs ground maintenance to include, fertilizing, coring, thatching, grass seeding, dragging, leveling and watering.
  • Performs licensed pesticide spraying.
  • May be required to return to work after hours during emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma – GED.
  2. One year experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or closely-related field.
  3. Ability to operate a variety of power tools.
  4. Elementary skill levels in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, cement finishing and mechanical skills.
  5. Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  6. Obtain within 180 days/maintain flagging card.
  7. Obtain within 180 days/maintain pesticide spray certification.
  8. Obtain within 180 days/maintain lift truck card.
Preferred Qualifications

Class A Combination Driver's License (CDL) with Air Endorsement and Tanker

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  1. Ability to operate equipment necessary to perform landscaping and maintenance responsibilities, including 5 yard dump truck, backhoe as a loader, tractor and wood chipper.
  2. Ability to deal effectively with the public and City buildings user groups.
  3. Operational knowledge of common hand and power driven tools is required.
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  (English)
  5. Ability to meet/communicate with public/citizens.
  6. Knowledge of irrigation systems and mechanics.
  7. Ability to read blueprints, plans and drawings.
Hours of Work

6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday – Friday

Working Conditions & Physical Activities
  1. Position works outdoors in inclement weather.
  2. Operates a variety of equipment which are loud and vibrate while in operation.
  3. Requires moving of objects weighing from 30 to 50 pounds.
  4. Must be able to climb in/out of trenches, excavation and equipment and climb ladders.

This position is represented by the Teamsters Local 763.  Membership options available upon employment with the City.
