The Apparel Production Assistant contributes to the Mercer Island Thrift Shop’s success by maximizing store sales through skilled and efficient handling of all apparel, shoes and accessories.

WORK HOURS:    Contract Position – 40 hours per week - Will be required to work non-standard workweeks and shifts to include days, evenings, weekends, special events and/or holidays.  This position requires flexibility in scheduling, however, typical work days are Monday through Friday.  Weekend availability is required for event preparation several times per year

HOURLY RANGE: $16.00-$17.00/hour DOE + Great Benefits (PERS Retirement, Paid Leave, Medical, Dental, Vision insurance)

Contract position through 12/31/2020.


Essential Job Functions
  • Maintain a well-organized production and receiving area
  • Sort, hang and price all clothing, shoes, linens and accessories
  • Continually improve work methods that reduce the handling of merchandise and increases output
  • Maintain visual standards and cleanliness of the department
  • Stock product to the sales floor and rotate merchandise
  • Handle the organization and clean-up of work stations and equipment at the end of each shift.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons and donors
  • Provide information to donors on acceptable donations according to the store’s best practice guidelines
  • Provide quick, friendly and helpful service over the phone
  • Assist with executing the seasonal merchandise storage-to-floor plan
  • Monitor reports and production priorities to drive sales
  • Communicate and cooperate with staff, volunteers and management
  • Consistently observe and apply safety, loss control and prevention techniques
  • Model and act in accordance with the City of Mercer Island Vision and Values
  • Assist with other projects as assigned
  • Must be available for early morning shifts beginning at 7:00 a.m.
  • A good driving record and valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Utilize and promote the communication center to provide consistent updates for team members.
  • Form a daily work plan with the lead of your team.
  • Keep the management team informed on the status of projects, employee breaks and any schedule changes for volunteers.
  • Anticipate and support volunteers with special needs.
  • Participate in volunteer recognition activities.
  • Ensure that sales floor print media standards are being met and the relevant in-store marketing materials are in place.

Safety and Loss Control

  • Work with team members using proper lifting techniques and appropriate moving aids.
  • Promote an internal culture of transparency.
  • Follow procedures to prevent shrinkage, loss and theft.
  • Inspect operations equipment for needed repairs and/or replacement and immediately inform the store management team. 
  • Manage exits, isles and walkways to be kept clear of objects and equipment 100% of the time.
  • Alert store management team and police/fire regarding any illegal behavior, thefts, injuries, accidents, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of consumer trends in apparel, designer brand names, hallmarks for quality, and pricing methods in a secondary market.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment is a necessity.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Ability to write or type information for others to read.
  • Ability to listen and communicate verbally to volunteers, staff, and the public in an effective manner.
  • Ability to drive a city vehicle; have a good driving record and valid Washington state driver’s license desired.
Physical Abilities & Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand and work an eight hour shift with rigorous physical activity
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. using appropriate lifting techniques and moving aids
  • Ability to work in a two story building, going up and down stairs frequently.
  • Ability to work around allergy-aggravating used merchandise.
  • Must maintain an open schedule of availability including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to abide by the City’s smoke and drug free working environment policy.
General City Requirements
  • All YFS staff members are required to maintain strict confidentiality and professional/ethical standards required by State and Federal statutes and by Youth & Family Services policy.
  • Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required.
  • Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
  • Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.
